    k. We kicked off our road to success program with an assembly.  We did a one man skit based   on a book about a boy named Robert Francis Weatherbee, a boy who was afraid to go to school and didn't want to learn to read and write. Robert wanted to be a fireman, a policeman, a sailor, or the President of the United States, but he couldn't read or write.  He TRIES to write a letter to his uncle about a certain kind of horse he wants but he can't read or write. Along the way a couple of interesting things occur that we demonstrate in the assembly. Also at the assembly, we gave a few of the teachers nick-names then had them dress up as their nick names and ride the bikes on the stage as we played music.  For example: Evil Kneivel Knudson and Harley Hartley. This week we are encouraging kids to turn off their TV's and read.  If the school reads 250,000 minutes in 2 weeks, our principal will eat a real, live worm at an assembly on Tuesday, April 27.  To get the kids excited about the assembly and encourage them to read, we have posted worm jokes and worm facts throughout our school, and each student received a “bookworm" bookmark, a gummy worm, and an apple donated by Winegars supermarket.  To conclude our road to success program this year, we are planning an assembly for May.  We will wrap up the story of Robert Francis Weatherbee, who loves horses, by having a dancing horse perform at our assembly.
    l. We have done a "Reading Rocks" theme this year. So we are having a band come and giving away our bikes! That evening we are having a reward party at an outdoor pool for the children and their families.  Last year several teachers rode their bikes the five miles to the pool for the children reading far above their goal.  "Reading Rocks" theme worked like this; I took pictures of all the teachers and adults in our building reading a book.  These are mounted outside every classroom on a paper that says "Reading Rocks".  Every class has a guitar (Poster board) that they have decorated.  When they meet their classroom goal for the week they get to hang the guitar outside their classroom so  everyone can tell if their class met their goal if the guitar is hanging.  We have taught the students a chant/song that they sing.... It is to the tune of We will Rock you!  Northlake Readers Rock you! Northlake Readers Rock you! We will read night and day! We won't stop except to play! We are the Knights and we'll confess we are on the Road to Success! Northlake Readers Rock you!!!! It is so fun to have them stand up and chant and clap.  I carry a toy electric guitar into the classrooms as I drive around on my bike and collect minutes each week from each class!  It has been very fun! Thanks for such a great program!
